OCTA covers damages caused by a vehickle driven by the driver in a process of traffic to third parties. In the case of traffic accident, the insurer instead of the culpable indemnifies any damage caused to the health of third party, property, roads and the environment. This type of insurance is regulated by law. This insurance is compulsory for all owners or authorized users of the vehicles registered in the Republic of Latvia.
From June 1 of 2008 it is no longer necessary to print out a policy signed by both parties. OCTA insurance policy can be checked by a police officer in a centralized database. Original OCTA policy is only needed when leaving the territory of the Republic of Latvia.
